The 2015 World Bank and IMF meetings begin tomorrow in Peru. It’s been nearly 50 years since the last time the joint meetings were held in Latin America. Some agenda items will center on issues like climate change, global poverty and refugees. But some critics of World Bank/IMF policies believe choosing Peru for the gathering was a cynical decision. Ahead of the meetings, the research NGO, Oakland Institute, released a new report on the failures of World Bank/IMF policies in Latin America. We’ll talk with Frédéric Mousseau, policy director at the Oakland Institute. He believes World Bank/IMF policies have increased poverty and led to the deaths of farmers and other indigenous activists who opposed World Bank-supported entities like the extraction industries. Mousseau will tell us why he calls Peru the “Poster Child of World Bank Policies in Latin America”.
