{"id":3206,"date":"2015-02-03T08:59:00","date_gmt":"2015-02-03T08:59:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ourlandourbusiness.org\/groups-demand-the-u-s-executive-director-of-the-world-bank-to-act-to-phase-out-business-indicators-2\/"},"modified":"2019-09-12T20:55:55","modified_gmt":"2019-09-12T20:55:55","slug":"groups-demand-the-u-s-executive-director-of-the-world-bank-to-act-to-phase-out-business-indicators","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ourlandourbusiness.org\/es\/groups-demand-the-u-s-executive-director-of-the-world-bank-to-act-to-phase-out-business-indicators\/","title":{"rendered":"Groups demand the U.S. Executive Director of the World Bank to Act to Phase Out Business Indicators"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"l-subsection\"><div class=\"l-subsection-h\"><div class=\"l-subsection-hh g-html i-cf\"><p><em>Tuesday, February 3, 2015. <\/em><br \/>\n<strong>Contact:<\/strong> Anuradha Mittal, +1 510-469-5228,\u00a0<a href=\"mailto:amittal@oaklandinstitute.org\">amittal@oaklandinstitute.org<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Aldo Caliari, +1 202-635-2757 x 134, acaliari@coc.org<\/p>\n<p><strong>Groups demand the U.S. Executive Director of the World Bank to Act to Phase Out Business Indicators<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>(Oakland, CA):\u00a0Though it largely controls the institution, the US Government refuses to take action on World Bank\u2019s programs that have adverse consequences on human rights, land rights, and social and environmental standards.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Last November, 2014, eleven US-based organizations <a href=\"http:\/\/oaklandinstitute.org\/sites\/oaklandinstitute.org\/files\/PDFs\/letter-civil-society-call-to-end-db-and-bba.pdf\">wrote to the US Alternate Executive Director of the World Bank<\/a>, Ms. Sara Aviel, urging her to take action in order to phase out the Bank\u2019s <em>Doing Business <\/em>and <em>Benchmarking the Business of Agriculture <\/em>(now called<em> Enabling the Business of Agriculture<\/em>) projects.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The letter was sent on behalf of <a href=\"https:\/\/ourlandourbusiness.org\/\"><em>Our Land Our Business<\/em><\/a>, a multicontinental campaign endorsed by 260 civil society organizations, trade unions, and farmers groups from around the world, which is demanding the end of these two World Bank projects.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe US is a key<a href=\"http:\/\/csis.org\/event\/doing-business-2015-report-going-beyond-efficiency\"> supporter of the <em>Doing Business<\/em> ranking<\/a>\u201d said Anuradha Mittal, Executive Director of the Oakland Institute, \u201cand has chosen to ignore the devastating impact of this race to the bottom it has set in motion to ensure corporate profits.\u201d \u201cWe are joined by the world\u2019s poorest and the most marginalized in demanding that this stops NOW,\u201d she continued.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The <em>Doing Business <\/em>report benchmarks and ranks 189 economies and, in 2014, claimed to have inspired over a quarter of the 2,100 reforms registered since its creation. The Oakland Institute\u2019s in-depth <a href=\"https:\/\/ourlandourbusiness.org\/reports-and-info\/country-reports\/\">study of fourteen countries<\/a> showed that, in order to improve the \u201cease of doing business,\u201d countries have adopted \u201creforms\u201d which lower labor and environmental standards, taxation of corporations, diminish businesses\u2019 contribution to social security, and allow cheap and easy transfers of land to attract investors.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In the <em>Doing Business<\/em> 2015, six of the ten countries classified as best performers had conducted reforms to ease land transfers. The race to deregulate driven by the World Bank\u2019s business indicators creates a structural framework that facilitates land and resource grabbing and threatens millions of livelihoods of communities and smallholder famers.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot only does the Bank ignore critics of the <em>Doing Business<\/em>, but it doubles down on this initiative by creating the new <em>Enabling the Business of Agriculture<\/em>, directly inspired from the first index,\u201d said Aldo Caliari, Director of Rethinking Bretton Woods Project at Center of Concern. \u201cThis is a slap in the face of the civil society organizations and will further undermine citizens\u2019 ability to determine the policies and regulations they want their governments to adopt,\u201d added Caliari.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cApplied to agriculture, such tools can create competition between developing countries to facilitate the importation of patented seeds and expensive artificial fertilizers,\u201d said Danielle Nierenberg, President of Food Tank. \u201cThe new <em>Enabling the Business of Agriculture<\/em> will foster dependence of smallholders on costly and environmentally destructive agricultural inputs, which are largely produced by Northern agribusinesses, not by local communities,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Business rankings undermine countries\u2019 sovereignty and threaten communities\u2019 livelihoods, and this is why the US should take action, to make sure the Bank\u2019s primary objective to eliminate poverty is upheld, while respecting human rights and economic, cultural and social rights.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p># # #<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/oaklandinstitute.org\/sites\/oaklandinstitute.org\/files\/PDFs\/letter-civil-society-call-to-end-db-and-bba.pdf\">Read<\/a> the letter addressed to the US Alternate Executive Director of the World Bank.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ourlandourbusiness.org\/\">Learn<\/a> more about the <em>Our Land Our Business<\/em> campaign.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Tuesday, February 3, 2015.
