La inversi\u00f3n extranjera directa en el pa\u00eds fue m\u00e1s que duplicada en los \u00faltimos a\u00f1os, y el Banco Mundial promueve activamente la inversi\u00f3n extranjera en el sector agr\u00edcola, a pesar de los numerosos problemas sociales, ambientales y de salud que est\u00e1n asociados con las plantaciones industriales en Nicaragua. Una de las actividades m\u00e1s perjudiciales es la producci\u00f3n de ca\u00f1a de az\u00facar para la producci\u00f3n de etanol.
